Hawaii is reopening for Travelers!
Aloha mai Kakou!
When will Hawaii reopen?
Hawaii state is currently under a mandatory 14 day quarantine for all arriving passengers from out of state. Individuals must serve a 14 day quarantine at a hotel or a residence. Violators can be fined up to $5000 and sent back to where they came from within 24 hours. Additionally, the quarantine cannot be served in an Airbnb rental but can only be served in a hotel or residence. If you are wondering what hotels are open on Oahu please see What hotels are currently open on Oahu?
On October 15, 2020, the state of Hawaii is implementing the Pre-travel testing program that can waive the mandatory 14 day quarantine. It requires travelers arriving to Hawaii from out-of-state, to present negative COVID-19 test results within 72 hours of their arrival. There are different COVID tests available but travelers must make sure they receive the right COVID test that will meet the state mandate. The details are not yet available on the Governer’s website but they are getting closer to providing the processing guidelines for validating the results. The Hawaii Tourism Authority has clarified a few things below.
Here is what is required to waive the 14 day quarantine upon arrival at Honolulu airport:
Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) from a CDC approved CLIA-certified laboratory. This is a viral swab test that determines whether or not you have COVID. CVS is also an approved lab but reports have indicated it’s around $139 for the test.
Traveler produces negative NAAT test results within 72 hours of arrival to Hawaii
If you do not have the results available at arrival, you must quarantine until you can prove negative results. And there will be no COVID testing available at the airport. If you do go under self-quarantine and need to contact the call center, please call the following:
Visitor or intended resident: 808-468-9952
Hawaii resident: 808-377-4760
For more information on this Please see the latest press releases by the Governors office. You can also read about the Pre-travel testing program through the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
If you have questions regarding exemptions, contact CovidExemption@hawaii.gov
Military members, DoD Civilians, and their dependents on PCS and TDY orders are exempt from the 14 day quarantine by Hawaii state, however, the local DoD service commands are requesting that military members serve the 14 day quarantine. Please contact your local service command for more information.
Travel to Japan may come sooner than later
Hawai'i could be the only US state to open up to Japan in the near future. Japan announced that international travel between Japan and 12 destinations are being considered in the near future. Hawai'i, Guam, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and Iceland already have designated agreements with Japan's Department of Agriculture since they share strict guidelines for importation of goods. Here is the Governor’s press release.
The current Japan travel ban has not affected Military service members and Civilians who are on PCS orders moving to and from Japan. Because COVID status can change on a dime, contact your local service command a few days prior to travel to find out the current status.
Mahalo and safe travels!
